Fill your Advent Calendar with treats in the run-up to Christmas

Advent calendars have been bringing beaming smiles to the face of kids for decades as they enthusiastically count down the days to December 25.

Most adults think back with fond memories to having an Advent calendar in their home at Christmas - whether it was a stylish wooden one with little boxes with dates on them or simply a cardboard one on a Christmas theme with a little chocolate treat hidden behind each window.

Now it's time to give your children the same joy of eager expectation during the days leading to Christmas. As the Jedi master would say: 'Spoilt for choices you will be'!

And that's true when it come to buying a wooden calendar for Xmas - there are dozens of great options available, ranging from around £15 for cheap wooden calendar to more than £50 for a deluxe one.

Advent lasts for four weeks and Sundays before Christmas and the birth of Jesus. The first commercial Advent calendars were produced by German Lutherans in the early 1900s and comprised several little coloured pictures which were attached to pieces of cardboard daily throughout December. Soon after German Gerhard Lang came up with the idea of a  calendar with 24 little doors on it.

Parents can add to the excitement of Christmas by adding all sorts of little treats and novelties inside the boxes of a calendar - sweets and chocolates are the most common idea for kids, but there's plenty of other suggestions if the boxes are to contain goodies for all the family - among these are key rings, fridge magnets, stickers, bracelet charms, gift vouchers, crystals and gemstones, lip balm and make-up accessories, flavoured tea bags and coffee sachets.

You could also consider adding a mixture of the little novelties you often find inside Christmas crackers such as magic tricks, crayons, nail clippers, mini tool set, hair ties, costume jewellery, paper hats, Lego pieces and marbles.

These delightful wooden calendars are normally painted in bright colours which are traditionally associated with Christmas including red, green, white, silver, gold, blue and yellow. The quality of the wood in these products can vary so it's best to buy the best one you can afford. Some luxury calendars have become family heirlooms and are passed down from generation to generation.

The traditional wooden reindeer Advent calendar for around £10- £15 simply involves changing the dates each day - however, this not really much fun for the kids unless you reward them with a chocolate for doing the job. They do actually look wonderful but lack something on the fun factor.

For around £20 you can buy a reindeer calendar with pockets on its body - but the best reindeer-theme option is the large reindeer head with 24 small jute bags hanging from its antlers - that is guaranteed to go down well with young boys and girls who can't wait for Christmas Day to arrive.

The multi-drawer style of wooden Advent calendar is perfect for hiding chocolates or little gifts in the tiny drawers. You can decorate it with your kids or leave it as is, with just numbers painted or pasted on the individual drawers. You can get really innovative with this type of calendar and come up with imaginative items to hide in the little drawer boxes.

The wooden Advent calendar tree with small drawers is a big favourite every year but it has less scope for customisation. Nevertheless, the chocolates or treats go conveniently inside the drawers and the tree itself looks beautiful. Don't expect a lifelike tree, however - this is more like a large triangle over a rectangular base and looks great because it is so well crafted.

If you're willing to pay around £50 and was a truly classy tree product, you should consider buying a tree-shaped calendar with 24 drawers at its base - the entire structure is beautifully painted with traditional motifs and small figures and also has a star at the top.

Christmas wouldn’t be the same without this little tradition

The new elk Nordic wooden Advent calendar is adorable with its cute smiling face and 24 detachable drawers set. Place them on either side of the elk and let the countdown begin. Available in red and for around £35, this could very well turn out to be a family heirloom for your children when they grow up.

For around £10 you can get yourself a very unusual looking Advent calendar which features two angels holding a jute rope with 24 beautifully designed pegs hanging from it. The pegs will hold gifts and treats and the cute little angels come in red dress and scarf or striped dress. This is appropriately named the 'Long Wooden Angel Advent Calendar' and would bring a smile to the face of any young child.

Coming back to traditional theme calendars - how about the train painted in red, green and gold? This one's an all time favourite and perfect for hiding gifts and messages. Besides, it looks wonderful as a showpiece all on its own. Priced at around £20, the wooden train calendar is certainly worth a look.

If you want a little extra, look for calendars that have LED illumination included. The soft light will do wonders to your room in the evenings. Calendars in this category include beautiful house shaped calendar in pastel shades with 24 windows in its front decorated with traditional motifs.

Some calendars have a musical feature and play various popular Christmas songs and carols. Music is all around us at Christmas and a musical calendar will add a tuneful bonus to the proceedings.

It's amazing how many style of wooden calendars are available - some of the more unusual choices include Santa, boxes, rusty buckets, hanging ornaments, musical doors, reindeer sleigh and even shabby winter cottage calendars?

Whatever your taste and requirement, there's bound to be a wooden Advent calendar for you. Don't hang around though - these marvellous wooden creations sell like hot cakes in the weeks before Christmas.
